A Journey Through Oku-Shizu
with All Five Senses
Special tour on 11-12 Feb. 2026
Held for only two days.
Savor food, culture, and architecture in perfect harmony
— a heartwarming retreat wrapped in the memories of the land.
Taste
The Authentic Flavors of the Countryside
Wasabi
Wasabi, a signature specialty of Okushizu, thrives only in the pure, cold spring water that flows from its mountains.
On this tour, you'll harvest wasabi at a local wasabi field and then prepare and taste it yourself. Through this hands-on experience, you'll also discover the unpretentious treats that local people savor in their everyday lives.
Ōkōchi Gozen
Dinner features a selection of the region’s finest dishes:
salt-grilled yamame trout, seasonal local vegetables steamed in a bamboo steamer, and Shizuoka oden.
We will also demonstrate traditional rice cooking using firewood and a “mushigama”—a steaming pot used until the early Showa era.
Bento
Breakfast is served in a vintage menpa lunch box from the Showa period.
Before eating, you can try making your own miso balls, using locally inspired ingredients.
The miso soup you prepare has a wonderfully comforting flavor.
Culture
Immerse Yourself in the Rich Culture and Timeless History
KAGURA
On this tour, you will experience the traditional Kagura of the Hirano district in Shizuoka City, performed by the local preservation society.
Central to this festival is the Kagura dance, which is offered to the gods. Accompanied by the sounds of the flute and taiko drums, male dancers who have purified themselves for the ritual perform movements that have been passed down for centuries.
One of the biggest highlights of the Hirano Kagura is the Sword Dance (Tsurugi no Mai), where a powerful yet graceful performance is dedicated to the deity.
Stay
The place you will be staying, Yado Nishimura, is a 250-year-old village headman’s residence.
A guided tour will be provided inside the house, with explanations from specialists about its structure and traditional building techniques.
Experience the architectural culture that has been preserved since the Edo period.
Nature
In this small village where the river and mountains are remarkably close, you can fully immerse yourself in the rich nature and beautiful scenery.
You will feel how food, culture, and architecture harmonize seamlessly with the natural surroundings.
