“Yado Nishimura” — Preserving Edo-era life for over 250 years
Yado-Nishimura is a whole-house lodging situated in a 250-year-old former village headman’s residence in the mountain region of Oku-Shizu (Oku Shizuoka), Shizuoka City. Preserved since the Edo period, this traditional home is a rare historical treasure—one of the very few places in Japan where guests can actually stay inside an authentic heritage building.
Here, the focus is not on modern comforts, but on experiencing the way people once lived in Japan. Sit on the engawa veranda and enjoy the quiet mountain scenery, gather around the irori hearth for a warm meal, slip on a padded hanten coat in winter, and in summer feel the cool breeze drifting in through the veranda. You can enjoy the everyday life of old Japan as something wonderfully extraordinary.
Living as people once did
At “Yado Nishimura,” seismic reinforcement work has been completed, but excessive renovations have been intentionally avoided. Rather than a modern Japanese-style interior, the house retains as much of its Edo-period character as possible. Because of this, the bath and toilet are located outside, requiring you to step outdoors—even with an umbrella on rainy days.
The original engawa remains, and only a single paper shoji screen separates it from the hallway. By embracing a bit of inconvenience, guests can experience traditional Japanese life more authentically.

A stay surrounded by rich nature and the changing seasons
The inn is nestled deep within Shizuoka City, encircled by mountain ranges. In spring, birdsong fills the air; in summer, the greenery becomes vibrant; in autumn, the large chestnut trees bear fruit; and in the crisp winter air, the silence feels soothing. It is an ideal retreat for those wishing to escape the bustle of the city and spend time at a slower, more peaceful pace.
When you wake in the morning, a sweeping view of the garden’s greenery greets you—an inspiring sight. At night, you can gaze up at a sky full of sparkling stars. On rainy days, you can enjoy the sound of raindrops falling on the garden trees and spend your time in quiet relaxation. Strangely enough, even in the rain, the garden looks beautiful.

For breakfast, we offer a traditional bento-style meal served around the irori, packed in an “Ikawa Menpa,” a traditional wooden lunch box. Please reserve in advance.

The inn is about one hour by bus or 40 minutes by taxi from Shizuoka Station. By car, it is 25 minutes from the Shin-Shizuoka Interchange on the Shin-Tōmei Expressway.
